Fall Into Your Inner Chill


It always seems like summer goes by so quickly, and before you know it Autumn arrives.  With the start of a new season, the yin season, it is time to reassess what's working, what's not, what you want to manifest into the final months of 2018.  It could be money, love, health, finding calm, or many other options.  It is also a time to ground, cleanse and nourish.  

Essential oils that are great for this time of year include: Thieves (which contains Lemon another good option), Orange, CedarWood, Idaho Blue Spruce, Frankincense, Clove, Cinnamon Bark & Ginger.  These range from uplifting citrus, grounding woods & oils that are also edible and often remind us of our favorite holiday meals.  There are many custom blends that can add flavor to your holiday gatherings.  My favorite Thanksgiving Diffuser blend is:  Thieves 3 drops, Lemon 2 drops, Citrus Fresh 2 drops.  Thieves is an absolute must for this season of the year.

Keep Your Midsummer Nights Chill

Summer Solstice, the official start of summer, was just a few days ago.  I celebrated by attending a rooftop yoga class sponsored by Athleta and some partners such as Unplug Meditation.  Immediately after the class, I made my first floral crown (so fun) and savored some beautiful views of downtown Los Angeles.  I also enjoyed the company of many amazing women of all sizes and shapes, gathered to share community while having a little fun. 

At home, I created a special diffuser blend which I designed in order to simulate the beach.  I combined 4 drops of Young Living's Stress Away™, which contains relaxing oils like Lavender and Copaiba with Lime and Vanilla.  I added 2 drops of Citrus Fresh™ to my diffuser.  The Citrus Fresh™blend contains many of my favorite citrus oils: Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Mandarin with a hint of Spearmint.  Adding Citrus Fresh™  gives my diffuser the uplifting feeling of summer and reminds me of relaxing days the shore.  

Next up with July 4th and summer vacations in the not so distant future is to choose the select group of oils that belong in this year's travel bag.  Fortunately, most of the oils are small enough that TSA has never questioned their presence.  It also is a good time to purchase one of the starter kits which contains the smaller 5M bottles.  

For me, this year's summer oil musts are:  

  • Thieves (this is available in both a spray which can be used as a hand sanitizer, as well as in bottle).  I make sure to have easy access to both while on the plane.
  • DiGize Vitality blends Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli essential oils for a fresh-tasting blend–a perfect follow-up to any meal again avoiding any unexpected discomfort after tying new foods.  Also, Essentialzyes-4 contains many similar oils and is a dietary supplement which comes in dual dose capsule blister packs (easy addition to any travel kit).  
  • Tea Tree for cuts, bites ...the oils of protection/boundary.  Similar benefits can also be found by using Kunzea, one of Young Living's newest products.  Unlike Tea Tree, which is more neutral, Kunzea has a pleasant woodsy aroma and is also suitable for diffusing.  
  • Citronella as a all natural insect repellant
  • Peppermint is also nice to have as it is uplifting when fatigued from a workout or travel, and can providing a cooling sensation when applied to tired muscles after a long walk or trip the gym.  It can also be added to bath water creating a revitalizing steam.

Got The Time Change Blues?

Essential Oils are great for energizing without the side effects caused by trying to power through via sugar high or caffeine buzz. Last Sunday marked the spring time change and the start of daylight savings.  It also somewhat painful as we all loose that precious extra hour of sleep. All of us were affected by the sleep deficit and it's effect on our bodies rhythm. I myself taught an early yoga class on Sunday, and later found myself napping later in the afternoon.

When that sleepy haze starts to drop in diffusing energizing oil like Lemon and Orange can make a huge difference in uplifting your mood as well as maintaining mental clarity. All the truly pure, citrus therapeutic-grade oils like the Young Living™ Vitality™ oils I use are also edible.  The citrus Vitality™ oils can be added to drinking water to enhance energy naturally. Diffusing Eucalyptus also energizes, and it helps tune in to deep breathing.   Breathing from the lower diaphragm helps ground and allows you to stay present and alert.

Taking time for light stretching or a walk around midday can be uplifting as well. This is also a great time to practice restorative yoga poses.  Poses like relined Cobbler’s Pose or Legs Up the Wall are both relaxing and also reinvigorate at the same time.  Spending 20 minutes in these poses combined with energizing oils equals an hour or more of deep sleep.  You leave your practice feeling incredible.  Using these techniques gets you ready to take control of the remainder of your day.  When you start to be in that funk, it is worth it to take time for a recovery day.  Practice these restorative techniques incorporating these amazing oils with me in my Urban Zen Integrative Therapy® classes, M/W 5p YogaWorks Hollywood and Friday 6:30p YogaWorks Woodland Hills.
